About Japanese Calligraphy

The word 'calligraphy' literally means 'the way of writing' but for the Japanese, the concept of calligraphy far surpasses this simple definition. It is an art form that has been studied and perfected over thousands of years. Each practitioner infuses their own unique personality and skill into their work. They are not simply reproducing a word, they are attempting to bring that word to life.

Using simple tools - brush, ink and paper - the artist combines intense concentration, rhythm and variations in brush pressure to produce unique works that are a reflection of their thoughts at that precise moment. This is what sets calligraphy apart from other art forms - each stroke can only be made once. Unlike other artists, calligraphers do not have the freedom to alter and modify brush strokes until they are happy with the overall result.

Japanese calligraphers use their work as a vehicle of self-discovery and self-development, thus, in addition to producing beautiful works of art, the artist endeavours to also produce inner change.
