Junko Azukawa grew up in the Japanese city of Toyama and has studied Japanese calligraphy and Sumie painting since the age of five and holds a teaching qualification from the Hokuriku Calligraphy Academy. She now studies directly under the prominent calligrapher, Shiro Aoyagi, whose works were recently acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria. After coming to Melbourne in 2005, Junko established the SUMIDO calligraphy and painting school and also began teaching at the Centre for Adult Education and the Box Hill Community Arts Centre, and has conducted numerous workshops in Victorian schools. She has also exhibited several times, including successful commercial exhibitions at Kazari and Fad Galleries. In 2007, Junko was commissioned to create the central artwork for the new label KIRIN Beer in Australia. Recently, Junko began working on a new artistic concept combining traditional sumi ink calligraphy and painting with watercolours and kimono fabric to create unique abstract scenes. Her original prose and poetry describes feelings about her own life and those around her. |
