30 May - 26 June 2009 "The Sounds of Ink"
Japanese Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition, Demonstrations and Workshops
Japanese calligraphy has a history of over 3000 years and is one of the most important art forms in Japan. Unlike oil painting in the western tradition, calligraphy uses soft brushes and papers, and once the ink touches the paper it can never be corrected. Each stroke, the moment, is the art and shows the artist's mind directly in the moment.
Calligraphy is words and words have power, so it is an immediate expression of the artist's thoughts, feelings and ideas just like music on paper. It has rhythm, tones and colours. The white paper is like a stage on which to play my poetic music, our instruments are brushes and inks. Traditionally, calligraphers use only black ink but the artists sometimes use watercolours, origami and kimono fabrics as well to bring their art closer to how they feel and what they want to share with others.
